Qld man extorted for $5000, trial hears

A man was punched in the face and told he would be killed if he didn't pay $5000 in two weeks, a Brisbane court has heard.

Anthony Toumpas and Emmanuel Janouris have pleaded not guilty and are on trial for assaulting and extorting Rhys Brennan in May 2013.

The Brisbane District Court heard on Tuesday that Janouris allegedly knocked Mr Brennan out with a punch during a meeting in the car park at the Mt Gravatt Hotel.

Mr Brennan, 28, told the jury he woke up on the ground to Toumpas slapping him out of a daze when Janouris threatened him.

"He said I had to pay $5000 in two weeks or I was dead," Mr Brennan said.

The court heard Toumpas got paper towels and a bottle of water to help clean up Mr Brennan's bleeding nose, which was broken and later required surgery.

Mr Brennan said he arranged to pay instalments into Toumpas's bank account because he could not afford to give a lump sum.

Prosecutor David Finch said Mr Brennan did not owe either of the men money before the incident.

The trial continues.
