A man charged with killing his father has been denied bail.

Timothy McCaffrey was initially charged with grievous bodily harm after his 69-year-old father allegedly fell down steps during an argument at a house at Clontarf, north of Brisbane, on Monday.

That was upgraded to manslaughter after his father, who suffered serious head injuries, died at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital on Tuesday morning.

The 43-year-old unsuccessfully applied for bail at Redcliffe Magistrates Court hours after his father's death.

He will remain in custody until returning to court on June 26.
