A Queensland man armed himself and tried to murder a man arguing with him in the Whitsundays region, police say.

The 26-year-old Collinsville man was charged late on Saturday with attempted murder and doing an act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

Three men arrived at his home about 12.45 am on Saturday, prompting an argument, police say.

The resident allegedly walked back inside his home, retrieved a firearm and shot one of the three men in the stomach.

The injured man - aged 29 from Collinsville - was helped into a vehicle by his associates and driven to the local hospital.

He was later flown to Townsville Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

The accused man also faces weapons and drug charges.

He is due to appear at Proserpine Magistrates Court on Monday.
