Qld man alleges police brutality on coast

A Queensland man who claims CCTV backs up his allegations of police brutality on the Gold Coast is seeking $100,000 in damages.

Michael Cox, 29, was arrested and taken to the Surfers Paradise police station in May last year.

Images from CCTV footage, leaked to The Courier Mail, appear to support his claims that a watch house officer handcuffed him, broke his wrist and slammed his head into the floor.

Mr Cox said had to take six weeks off work to recover.

"If I walked down the road and broke someone's wrist I'd be charged with assault, so why can the police get away with it?" he told the newspaper.

The 29-year-old had been arrested for failing to comply with a "move on" order after he was the victim of an assault outside a Broadbeach night club.

Mr Cox has lodged a claim against Queensland Police for more than $100,000 for pain and suffering.

It's the second incident involving leaked CCTV footage from the same watch house, with an internal review of policing culture on the Gold Coast already underway.

The state's corruption watchdog this week publicly explained its involvement in an investigation into the bashing of a handcuffed man in custody in 2012.

The Crime and Corruption Commission had been pressured to clarify its role by civil libertarians amid allegations of a cover up.

The police officer who allegedly leaked footage of the 2012 incident, Sergeant Rick Flori, is currently facing criminal misconduct charges.

The two officers in the footage have not been prosecuted.
