Queensland launches Olympic bid taskforce

Queensland is inching closer to launching a bid for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games after the state government announced it would help fund a study into how much the events would cost taxpayers.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will chair the cross-government taskforce charged with assessing venues, transport infrastructure and economic viability.

All of Queensland would need to be included and benefit if the state were to host to the international sporting event, she said.

"The rules have changed, in terms of we don't need these mega-structures anymore," she told reporters on Tuesday.

Ms Palaszczuk expects a decision on whether or not to progress to the next stage will be made early next year.

Her government will match the federal government's $10 million contribution for the study, building on studies already carried out by the southeast Queensland Council of Mayors.

Tuesday's announcement comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged the state government to throw its weight behind the bid and make it happen.

Federal Minister for sport Richard Colbeck welcomed the state moves to "finally" join the process to bid for 2032.

"We'd like the premier of Queensland to join us at the starting blocks," Mr Colbeck said.

"At the moment she appears to be back in the change rooms with the tracksuit still on."

But Ms Palaszczuk says now is not the time for political pot-shots.

"I need everyone to be working together," she said.

"I need everyone on board, I don't need people sniping at the sidelines."

Queensland caught the world's attention when it hosted the Commonwealth Games last year, Ms Palaszczuk said.

"We delivered a Commonwealth Games that got the world's attention, that was inclusive of cities outside the Gold Coast such as Townsville and Cairns and we delivered them on time and under budget," she added.
