Qld hotel at centre of violent assault

A 43-year-old man allegedly pinned down a woman at a Gold Coast hotel and tried to stab her in the chest.

Two officers were investigating another matter at a Canungra hotel on Thursday morning when they heard a woman's screams.

Police say they discovered a man was holding a woman down while trying to stab her in the chest.

The officers drew their guns and demanded that he release her and to drop the knife.

The 45-year-old woman was able to crawl to safety but while police tried to arrest the man, he attacked them.

A passing off-duty police officer saw the scuffle and helped the other officers restrain him.

The officers received minor injuries while the woman had several injuries, including head injuries allegedly inflicted before they arrived.

The man has been charged with attempted murder, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, serious assault of police and going armed in public.
