Qld police work to clear explosives house

Dozens of residents remain locked out of their Brisbane homes as a man prepares to front court, accused of mixing up potentially deadly batches of chemicals at his house.

Police have carried out controlled explosions at the man's Rochedale South home since raiding the property on Saturday, tipped off by a series of photos and posts the 32-year-old made on Facebook.

Officers have ruled out any links to terrorist groups and this weekend's G20 world leaders' summit.

They have suggested many of the chemicals found at the home point to illicit drug manufacturing.

But other evidence included bullet casings, spent munitions and an inert training grenade the man had allegedly taken home after fossicking at restricted military weapons ranges.

Acting Chief Superintendent Noel Powers has apologised to residents who are still waiting to go home, saying the volatile nature of the material they found means it can't be moved.

He warned the clean-up was complex and would be long, but said the man was not an avid bomb maker.

"He's someone with an unhealthy curiosity about explosives, combined with a limited knowledge of chemistry, perhaps a more than average level of knowledge in chemistry. It's a lethal combination," he told reporters.

"It appears this individual has probably been experimenting a little bit. There's a number of concoctions, a number of mixtures put together."

Police are trying to find out how the man obtained the chemicals.

He is due to face the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday, charged with manufacturing explosives without authority, failing to correctly store explosives and unlawfully possessing weapons.
