Qld govt teams up with AFL for migrants

It's an Australian institution and now a day out at the footy is set to help the country's newest arrivals.

The Queensland government announced on Thursday it would fund a $40,000 program through which refugees and migrants will be aided by the Gold Coast AFL club to find jobs.

Under the program, the Suns will offer match-day volunteer positions to local migrants and refugees, and use their business connections to help those people find jobs.

Queensland Multicultural Affairs Minister Glen Elmes says it makes sense to combine the Suns' place in the community with their ability to aid those in need.

"It's that sense of worth, being associated with a sporting team, a great footy team in this particular case," Mr Elmes said.

"But the Gold Coast Suns also have their business network, so it'll be then exposing these people to that network as well and find opportunities for them within business to acquire a full time job."

The Suns' community manager Kelly Ryan says the club is a major employer on the Gold Coast and couldn't be happier to be running the migrant and refugee program.

"(It) will allow us to engage and support these Gold Coasters, providing them support and confidence to settle on the coast and improve their employability," she said.

It's expected up to 100 job seekers will take part in the program over the next 12 months.
