Qld govt opposed to unrestricted trading

Small businesses will suffer if trading hour restrictions are lifted, Queensland's attorney-general says.

A draft report into competition policy by economist Ian Harper has recommended an abolition of trading hour restrictions, describing them as anti-competitive.

His report for the federal government recommends allowing exceptions for Christmas, Good Friday and Anzac Day mornings.

But state Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie says he's opposed to the scrapping of trading hour restrictions.

"If there was a full deregulation it would have a major impact on small businesses," he told reporters in Brisbane on Wednesday.

"We've got to make sure that we stand up for small businesses.

"The government hasn't been convinced of the need for change."

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland is also against a full deregulation of trading hours.
