Qld govt open to extending political terms

Queensland's Labor government is open to a conversation about extending the state's political terms beyond three years, deputy premier Jackie Trad says.

The Liberal National Party's overwhelming majority, won at the 2012 election, has previously fuelled a discussion about whether the state's upper house should be reinstated.

Ms Trad on Thursday acknowledged there had been consideration about extending the current three-year political terms both in opposition and in government.

"I think it's fair to say a three-year cycle is too short a time frame to embed reforms," Ms Trad told a Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) business lunch.

"The four year term quandary will not be resolved unless both sides of politics agree to embark upon this political reform process."

But Ms Trad said it was a conversation worth having.

"Sometimes I feel as though there's an election every year, I'm sure everybody feels that way," she said.

"But I think what we can do is have a broader conversation about all of those issues that have been bubbling away for some time."
