Qld funeral boss calls for industry probe

The head of the Queensland Funeral Directors Association has called for a formal inquiry into the industry.

The Courier-Mail on Monday reported rogue operators were rife and said some funeral directors were effectively chasing ambulances so they could be first in line to sell lucrative funeral packages to grieving families.

"Where there's smoke there's fire, it's worthwhile having an investigation," Anton Brown told the Courier.

The paper detailed a practice dubbed "cremation shopping" where funeral directors agree to cremate a body at a particular location but then stockpiled it with others before taking the corpses to other sites where cremation charges were cheaper.
