Qld firefighter legislation rejected

Proposed legislation making it difficult for Queensland's volunteer firefighters to claim workers' compensation could be ditched.

A committee reviewing the law - which would require volunteer firefighters to fight 150 fires over five years before they could become eligible for work-related cancer compensation - on Wednesday recommended it be scrapped by the government.

Instead, it endorsed the LNP's policy of giving equal compensation support to firefighters regardless of their pay status.

Opposition emergency services spokesman Jarrod Bleijie has urged Labor to adopt the committee's recommendation.

"We urge Labor to rise above politics and ensure the 36,000 volunteer firefighters in Queensland get a fair deal," he said on the Sunshine Coast.
