Ex-Qld MPs warned to clean up online

Former Queensland politicians could face punishment from the current parliament if they keep referring to themselves as MPs online.

Speaker Peter Wellington told parliament on Wednesday he had been notified of several examples in which ex-MPs were still using the MP title in their names or still suggested they represented their former electorates on social media and web pages.

A quick search of those ousted at January's state election show several were yet to update their online presence.

For instance, former Brisbane Central MP Robert Cavallucci still has a website suggesting he is the current MP, complete with the Queensland Parliament's logo.

Meanwhile, former Lytton MP Neil Symes still uses the term "MP" in his Twitter handle.

"Falsely holding oneself out to be a current member of parliament is a serious issue, which may constitute a contempt of parliament," Mr Wellington said.

He said some former MPs had suggested they were having trouble updating their online presence with third parties.

He said parliamentary services officers would continue to monitor their online presences and Clerk Neil Laurie would let him know by the end of parliament's next sitting week in early June.

"I will consider at the time whether to send this matter to the ethics committee for its consideration," Mr Wellington said.
