Qld drivers 'like warning of speed traps'

More than half of Queensland drivers are willing to break the law to alert others to speed cameras, the RACQ says.

Research by the peak motoring body says nearly 55 per cent of motorists regularly flashed their headlights to warn of approaching speed traps.

The RACQ's Mike Sopinksi said while motorists believed they were doing a community service, they should be aware the practice was actually illegal and could be quite dangerous.

The research also said radio reports were the most common way drivers became aware of speed traps.

MOST COMMON METHODS OF LOCATING SPEED CAMERAS:

1. Radio reports of locations (31.7 per cent)

2. Tip-offs from family and friends (19.2 per cent)

3. Social media sites (12.8 per cent)

4. Mobile apps - (8 per cent)

5. Radar detecting devices (7.4 per cent)
