Qld drinkers won't be breathalysed: D'Ath

Queensland's attorney-general has ruled out random breath tests for nightclub patrons as part of a planned crackdown on alcohol-fuelled violence.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath's clarification of her government's plans follows a newspaper report in which she is quoted as saying breathalysing drunk patrons could help police build a case for prosecution.

"There is no plan to random breath test drinkers and there never has been," Ms D'Ath said in a statement on Friday.

Her clarification came as the fledgling Labor government came under attack from hotel and nightclub lobby groups for plans to introduce a 1am lockout - brought forward from 3am - as part of its election policy to tackle alcohol-fuelled violence.

Other measures include preventing clubs and pubs serving alcohol after 3am, brought forward from 5am, and banning the service of shots after midnight.

"Our plan is based on the advice of experts in the field and the clear experience of other jurisdictions who are successfully tackling this issue," Ms D'Ath said.

"We are determined to ensure venues are safe places for everyone to enjoy.

"We'll back these laws up with intelligence-led policing, increased liquor licensing inspections and education and awareness campaigns."
