Qld cross river rail bill to be introduced

Legislation to set up a body to deliver Brisbane's proposed $5.4 million cross river rail tunnel will be introduced into the state's hung parliament on Tuesday.

The Cross River Rail Delivery Authority Bill, if passed, would pave the way for an authority to effectively operate as a government-owned corporation overseeing the project.

Similar authorities have been set up interstate for projects like the NSW Barangaroo development.

The opposition last week attacked the minority Labor government for failing to meet its own October deadline to set up the body which it said was laid out in an as-yet unreleased business case.

The Liberal National Party has consistently found political fodder within that document, accusing the government of secretly planning new taxes to fund the project in the business case during the annual budget estimates hearings earlier this year.

Labor has been locked in a long-running argument with the federal government over funding cross river rail, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull last week refusing to agree to paying for its construction until the flow-on benefits were made clear.

The government is also preparing for parliamentary debates this week on legislation around domestic and family violence prevention, medicinal cannabis and major sports facilities.
