Coroner to probe UK racer's death

An inquest will investigate the death of promising British motor racer Sean Edwards in a fiery crash that left the motorsport community in shock.

The 26-year was killed instantly when the Porsche GT3, in which he was a passenger, ploughed into a barrier at Queensland Raceway on October 15, 2013.

Now, a coroner will investigate why the car, driven by the then 20-year-old Will Holzeimer, strayed from the track, and whether safety standards at Willowbank were up to scratch.

A four-day inquest is due to start on August 31 before deputy Queensland coroner John Lock.

Holzeimer, who was severely injured in the smash, is among 13 witnesses due to give evidence.

Arrangements will be made for Edwards' family to listen to proceedings via phone hook-up.

Edwards had been coaching Holzeimer at the time of the crash.

The young driver appeared in the movie Rush as his father, former Formula One driver Guy Edwards.

The inquest will also look at the circumstances leading up to the crash, the driver's experience, whether the car was mechanically sound, and the adequacy of track safety features at Queensland Raceway.
