Qld coroner backs police response to siege

Police couldn't have stopped a man taking his own life during a Boxing Day siege at a Brisbane home, a coroner has found.

Queensland Coroner Terry Ryan has backed the way officers handled the 2013 siege in which a Banyo mother and daughter were held hostage before gunman, 45-year-old Brent Rivett, turned his weapon on himself.

"I am satisfied the actions and decisions made by the attending police constables in the immediate lead up to Mr Rivett's death were appropriate and timely," Mr Ryan said in handing down inquest findings on Monday.

"The attending constables or other Queensland Police Service officers could not have reasonably prevented Mr Rivett's death."

Last week's inquest heard Rivett was armed with a knife and loaded shotgun when he invaded the Brisbane home on the morning of December 26, 2013.

He handcuffed a terrified mother and her 13-year-old daughter and said it was payback for the father's alleged affair with his ex-partner.

Rivett was disturbed by police while trying to flee with cash and turned his gun on himself shortly after.

However, it was more than four hours later before the frightened hostages were rescued as no one knew Rivett was dead.

Medical records revealed he had previously been admitted to a mental health ward and in previous months had ended a relationship and lost his job.

Mr Ryan said he was satisfied with an internal police investigation into the incident and made no recommendations or criticisms of the officers involved.

"They responded professionally and in accordance with their training in a protracted situation involving a man, who was initially unknown to them, in possession of a weapon," Mr Ryan said.
