Qld kidnapper to be released from US jail

A woman who was extradited from Queensland to face parental kidnapping charges in the US is set to be released from prison.

Dorothy Lee Barnett, 54, was convicted of kidnapping and falsifying passport documents after she was extradited to the US last year.

She was arrested in 2013 after she was found to be living on the Sunshine Coast with her daughter Savanna.

Barnett fled South Carolina in 1994 with then 10-month-old Savanna after a custody battle.

Police said the pair left for a birthday party and never returned.

Barnett is due to be released from prison on Saturday after serving a total of 21 months in custody.

Her ex-husband's lawyer, Graham Sturgis, says Barnett still has two years' probation to serve.

"I can't imagine that having gone through the extradition process that she would be permitted to leave the United States at all," he told ABC radio.

"But a condition of her probation would be that she informs the probation officer of any requests to go anywhere, she needs to remain within the jurisdiction."
