A Brisbane fish and chip business that became infested with cockroaches has been given a fresh start by its new owner.

Reuben Mcgonigle took over the O'Connor's Traditional Fish & Chips at Windsor in February last year.

The 31-year-old says it was "slightly messy" when he bought it, but he has since cleaned up the shop.

It now meets all local council rating levels and has always complied with food safety regulations, he says.

The shop's previous owner was this week ordered to pay $12,000 for breaching the Food Act by the District Court of Queensland.

Health inspectors had found the premises dirty and crawling with cockroaches and flies.

But Mr Mcgonigle says the shop was surveyed by an independent investigator on Thursday morning and given the all-clear.

"It's come a long way," he said.
