Qld child stable after near drowning

An eight-year-old boy hospitalised after an inflatable toy accident that killed another boy at a Queensland beach on Sunday is in a stable condition.

The child was flown to Nambour General Hospital in a critical condition on Sunday after the toy the pair were playing with flipped and blew away with the wind at Norman Point, south of Fraser Island.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed on Monday the boy's condition was now stable.

Police said the children started to struggle in the high winds and deep water.

A 49-year-old man swam out to help the pair but also became distressed in the conditions.

The three swimmers were pulled from the water and taken to shore by a man on a yacht, but a nine-year-old boy died at the scene.

The 49-year-old was taken to Gympie Hospital in a critical condition but was discharged on Sunday night.
