Qld business confidence on the rise

Queensland businesses are more optimistic after the state budget, but they're still worried about economic risks.

Confidence rose to 42.7 per cent in the June quarter of this year, up from 37.7 per cent in the March quarter, according to a Westpac Group-Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) survey.

The level of optimism is still well below the national average of 48.1 per cent and the 50 per cent mark, which indicates growth prospects are strengthening.

CCIQ's Nick Behrens says businesses responded positively to the budget, but he warns they're still concerned about the weak resource sector, drought and reduced consumer spending.

"Businesses have realised that a change in government does not necessarily mean a change in Queensland's economic fortunes," he said in a statement.

"Sustaining this uplift in confidence will be challenging."

Treasurer Curtis Pitt trumpeted the figures in response to his first budget, handed down earlier this month.

"Business, industry, unions and community groups have welcomed our first budget and its positive plan to promote jobs, growth and investment," he said.

Shadow Treasurer John-Paul Langbroek said it was heartening to see an improvement in confidence, but Queensland was still not out of the woods.

"Labor's budget failed to outline a clear economic vision, a plan to pay down debt or a plan to invest in the next wave of job-creating infrastructure, and this will remain a concern moving forward," Mr Langbroek said.
