The residents of a Sunshine Coast township being threatened by a bushfire are returning home after being evacuated overnight.

The fire in the tiny community Teewah, north of Noosa, flared late on Tuesday night prompting the evacuation, leaving fire crews battling to control the blaze.

In the early hours of Wednesday, conditions improved and residents were allowed to back to their homes. Teewah has a population of about 22 people.

The fire is now burning on the eastern side of the Noosa River, west of Teewah, and slowly travelling slowly in a north, north-westerly direction,

"Backburning operations are now complete and residents have been allowed to return to their properties," Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said on Wednesday.

The bushfire warning for Teewah is now at 'advice' level, meaning residents need to keep alert in case the situation changes again.
