Qld brothel madam won't face trial

Charges have been dropped against a brothel madam over the execution-style killing of a Brisbane rugby league referee.

Susan Ellen Stewart's matter was reviewed in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday, where a formal notice of abandonment was presented by prosecutors.

As such, she will not face trial over the death of Tony McGrath on the pre-existing charges of murder and attempted murder.

It comes after Tyson John Taylor was earlier this year found guilty of the execution-style shooting of the retired accountant in the garage of his Woolloongabba home in May 2013.

The jury also found him guilty of attempting to murder Mr McGrath in a fire at the 57-year-old's house in October 2012.

The police investigation targeting Taylor involved undercover officers posing as members of a criminal syndicate befriending the man and enlisting him to do "jobs".

This sophisticated ruse culminated in him confessing to an officer pretending to be the gang's boss in a penthouse suite meeting at the Stamford Plaza.

In May, Justice Martin Burns sentenced him to life imprisonment for murder and 15 years behind bars for attempted murder, ordering Taylor to serve 22 years before being eligible for parole.
