Public told not to spread blast rumours

Social media users have been told to stop spreading rumours about a caravan explosion that killed a father and his young children.

Charlie Hinder, his seven-year-old daughter, Nyobi, and four-year-old son, River, were killed when their caravan exploded in Mount Isa on Tuesday morning.

More than 70 police are completing the gruesome task of sifting through the crime scene, which extends for several hundred metres on suburban Deighton St.

They said it's too early to tell what caused the tragedy and have underlined appeals to the public not to "scaremonger" online.

"Social media can sometimes be extremely frustrating in investigations," Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor said.

"We're just asking people to ... be respectful for not only the community here in Mount Isa, but other family and friends who may read those comments."

Mr Hinder, 39, is being remembered as a quietly spoken, loving father.

But he had been showing signs of depression, according to friend Kev Spanner, who runs a convenience store in the city.

Mr Spanner recently suggested Mr Hinder take a holiday, but the 39-year-old replied, "I can't leave my kids".

A structural assessment will be conducted on a house on the property which caught fire after the explosion.

Police hope they will be able to reduce the crime scene by Thursday afternoon so more families can return to their homes.
