Qld baker uses broom to fend off robber

A Cairns bakery owner has used a wooden broom to fend off a robber armed with a hammer.

Police say the robber demanded cash and smashed glass panels in a fridge and a display cabinet before fleeing empty handed from the Bungalow bakery just before 9am on Tuesday.

A 22-year-old man was apprehended nearby and is due to face the Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges of armed robbery whilst threatening violence and wilful damage.
