Python devours hare near Queensland school classroom

A school in Queensland has made an urgent call to a snake catcher after finding a python constricting and eating a hare near one of its classrooms.

Snake catcher Bryce Lockett told 9news.com.au he received a call from Kooralbyn International School this morning.

The 21-year-old snake catcher arrived to find a 2.5-metre coastal carpet python wrapped around a hare.

Mr Lockett said students and staff were "pretty shocked".

"The snake was on the path to one of the classrooms," he said.

Mr Lockett said it was the first "hare-snake call" he had received in his four-year stint as a snake catcher.

He said he has caught around 100 carpet pythons this year and managed to relocate the snake - with its prey - to another part of the bush.

"He was pretty placid," he told 9news.com.au.

"He was just enjoying his meal."

Mr Lockett said coastal carpet pythons are common in the region and can grow up to around four metres in length.
