I'm using Qld hung parliament, Pyne says

Labor defector Rob Pyne has admitted he quit the party so he could take advantage of Queensland's hung parliament.

The now-Independent Cairns MP on Thursday posted a video to YouTube explaining why he left Labor, listing local projects and services he wanted the government to deliver for his electorate.

"At the end of the day, I felt that by becoming an Independent I can use the numbers in the parliament to demand the state government act on these important items and programs for Cairns," he said in the video.

"I'm all about the 99 per cent, not the one per cent.

"What Brisbane politicians and southern corporations want doesn't interest me, but I do care about providing facilities and services for Cairns workers and Cairns businesses."

Mr Pyne's defection means he's one of four crossbenchers, alongside fellow defector Billy Gordon and the state's two Katter's Australian Party MPs Rob Katter and Shane Knuth, who have the power to block Labor's minority government legislation.

Independent Speaker Peter Wellington's vote only comes into play to break a deadlock in the state's 89-seat parliament, where Labor and the Liberal National Party opposition hold 42 seats each.

Mr Pyne's video, entitled "Why I left the ALP (Part 1 - Cairns Projects and Services)" suggested the outspoken MP could have more to say about his reasons for leaving Labor.

It's not the first time he's sought to justify his defection, last week telling parliament he was sick of the party system, which was being used as a "vehicle for career advancement" for MPs who weren't concerned about wider labour values.

Mr Pyne also said he was bullied by Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, who was being investigated by parliament's powerful ethics committee over the allegations.

His defection prompted angry responses from some colleagues, who labelled him a rat and a megalomaniac, and an expletive-laden tirade from Electrical Trades Union organiser Michael Haire, which was read in parliament.
