Probe after body found in burnt Qld house

Forensic officers will continue searching the burnt ruins of a Rockhampton house where a body was found.

Neighbours heard a loud bang before flames engulfed the Lakes Creek house about 2.30am on Thursday in a fire that police consider suspicious.

Four hours after the home was destroyed, human remains were discovered in the smouldering rubble.

Queensland police have not released the gender or the age of the victim and say identification could take several days.

Senior Sergeant Luke Peachy says forensic officers will determine if the person who died was killed by the fire, or something else.

"Any time a house fire has occurred we always treat it as suspicious until otherwise proven," Snr Sgt Peachy said.

"Until we can determine how that body has come to be there, we'll declare a crime scene and wait for advice from our forensic officers ... about how it may have started."
