'Postcard Bandit' granted parole in Qld

Infamous bank robber and prison escapee Brenden Abbott has been granted parole but it remains unclear how much time he'll spend outside jail in Queensland.

The Queensland Parole Board on Wednesday approved his application for parole, and it's understood the so-called "Postcard Bandit" is set to be released from the Woodford Correctional Centre on April 20.

The 53-year-old has served 18 years of a 23-year sentence but had failed in multiple previous parole applications.

His impending release comes after he in January launched a legal challenge to the parole board's decision not to release him last year, claiming he'd been "squeaky clean" since 2005.

However, Wednesday's developments could be complicated if Western Australian authorities decide to seek his extradition for "outstanding criminal matters" in the state later on.

"WA Police will take appropriate action, in consultation with other departments both in WA and interstate, once the release date has been confirmed," a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon read.

Meanwhile, South Australian police have also chimed in, stating they are aware of Abbott's situation but yet to determine a course of action.

"Police are currently reviewing files in consultation with other jurisdictions to determine if and when any further charges will proceed," their statement said.

Late last month, Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Jean Dalton set aside the parole board's decision, saying it had made an error and would have to reconsider Abbott's application.

In addition to his "squeaky clean" pledge, Abbott had also argued he'd been knocked back because there was a policy preventing his status being downgraded from high security.

But he assured Justice Dalton he hadn't breached any custodial rules in more than 10 years and had the support of prison bosses.

Abbott was imprisoned for a number of bank robberies and breaking out of Sir David Longland Prison in 1997.
