Police have ruled out that a police officer missing in Queensland for more than five years has been spotted in the state's far north.

Senior Sergeant Mick Isles had been on his way from Ayr to a training seminar in Townsville when he disappeared in September 2009. His car and uniform were found five days later in a dry creek bed, 80km southwest of Ayr.

A Coroner ruled in 2012 that Sen Sgt Isles likely took his own life, although his family remains adamant he was not suicidal.

Police have told AAP they received a report on Monday from a grazier near Ayr that he had seen a man wandering near his property.

The farmer had a brief conversation with the man before phoning police to ask them to investigate.

But when police produced photos of Sen Sgt Isles, the farmer said the man didn't look like the man he had seen.

Police are now trying to determine the man's identity.
