Police call for Xmas caution on Qld roads

Queensland drivers are being urged to make good decisions on the roads, as police carry out a major annual blitz on drink driving.

Operation Stopper is set to run until Sunday, involving thousands of officers across the state.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating says the state has had a very poor final few road safety weeks heading into the holiday period.

"About four weeks ago the projection was we were 12 under on the road toll. As of this moment we're at plus four, so 239," Mr Keating told reporters on Friday.

While police will be targeting drivers with RBTs this weekend, he said all road users, including pedestrians, need to take care.

There have been 17 fatalities on the state's roads in December alone - more than one a day.

"These are not made-up stories, these are lives lost and unfortunately, we will see people who are a memory this Christmas, not present for the event."
