Two confirmed dead in Queensland training flight

A pilot and his passenger have died in a light plane crash west of Cairns, the aircraft plummeting into a cornfield during an alleged training exercise.

Police and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched an investigation after the aircraft went down near Mareeba Airport about 11.15am today.

The pilot, a 73-year-old man from Cooktown, and passenger, a 63-year-old man from Stuart, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Patrol Inspector Kevin Goan told media the pilot was going through a training exercise.

Witnesses on the ground have claimed the plane's engine was making unusual noises before the crash, according to Insp Goan.

ATSB released a statement confirming the aircraft was built by the Angel Aircraft Corporation.

It is registered to Anju Azul Aviation Pty Ltd, which has a registered address in Cooktown.

Police have appealed for information from witnesses.
