Two Queensland cities have recorded their hottest March days.

Temperatures soared to 38.5C in Bundaberg and 38C in Maryborough on Monday, beating records set in 1897 and 1988 respectively.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Harry Clark said the rising mercury in the two Wide Bay locations was likely due to winds buffeting a lingering warm air mass into the region.
