Callous 'low-lives' steal from dying man

Two people allegedly stole a dying man's credit card while others tried in vain to save his life after a car crash at Queensland's Hervey Bay, in what police have called a "disgusting and callous act".

The pair are alleged to have used the credit card to buy booze from bottle store chains in the quiet tourist town and nearby Maryborough.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mick Polit said it was the "lowest act" he had encountered in his police career and it had "shocked and disgusted" the tight-knit community.

Police say the credit card was stolen from the 37-year-old man's wallet as he lay dying and two others attempted desperately to give him CPR.

"To think these two low-lives came across an incident like this and completely ignored what any decent human being would do and instead stole his credit card is almost beyond belief," Det Sen Sgt Polit told reporters.

The widow of the man noticed his credit card wasn't in the wallet when it was returned to her and discovered it had been used 11 times following his death on Saturday morning.

"She's heavily traumatised," Det Sen Sgt Polit said.

A 28-year-old man and 27-year-old woman were charged with stealing and fraud after a police raid in Hervey Bay.

The man was denied bail in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Wednesday while the woman was bailed.

They are both expected to appear in the same court on January 12.

Police say they expect to lay more charges in the coming days as their investigation continues.
