There is anecdotal evidence that organised crime is financing terrorism, the head of Queensland's Crime and Corruption Commission says.

Chairman Alan MacSporran says links between organised crime and the funding of terrorism-related activities is being watched closely in Australia.

He agreed there was anecdotal evidence that was occurring "because of the huge cash flow and profits they make, it is a very simple covert way to finance terrorism and something we need to keep a close watch on."

Mr MacSporran told ABC Radio drug trafficking was by far the most lucrative vice for organised crime gangs, and crystal methamphetamine (ice) was their product of choice.

"I can assure you that ice has been identified, globally, not just in Australia ... as a high threat, in fact the highest threat," he said.

"Of our eight organised current investigations, six of them involve trafficking in ice."

Mr MacSporran said organised crime was well embedded in the ice trafficking industry and outlaw motorcycle gangs were only part of the problem.

"Ultimately if it's organised crime - drug trafficking, drug dealing - it doesn't take too much intelligence to realise you are doing the wrong thing," he said.
