One-metre law for cyclists deemed a success in Queensland

An independent review has found that the law requiring motorists keep at least one metre from cyclists at all times has been a success, following its introduction in 2014.

As part of the review, 8000 cyclists and passing motorists were filmed at 15 locations across Queensland.

Eighty-eight percent of drivers were found to obey the new law in 60km/h speed zones, compared to 80 percent in higher speed areas.

Just 72 drivers were caught breaking the law by the end of last year.

Drivers caught getting too close to cyclists now face a $350 dollar fine.

The government admits that while enforcing hasn't been easy, the findings are encouraging.

“We've got a long way in terms of cyclists safety in Queensland but I think this is an important step forward,” Queensland Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports Mark Bailey told 9NEWS.
