North Qld residents told to stay off roads

North Queensland residents have been urged to stay put as a potentially dangerous monsoon trough brings thunderstorms and heavy rains.

Mt Isa MP Rob Katter urged people to stay off the roads during the severe weather, saying emergency resources should not be stretched any further than they needed to be.

"We have been informed officials and rescue workers are doing their best to ensure the safety of the area and a speedy clean up," Mr Katter said.

"Flash flooding is common and conditions are continuing to change at this time so we need keep people out of danger."
