Residents in far north Queensland have been told to prepare to evacuate as firefighters struggle to control a fast-moving bushfire.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have told residents in Millstream, south-west of Cairns, to enact their bushfire plans and be ready to evacuate.

QFES said the fire is expected to impact Wooroora Road, Mount Ronald Road, Eucalyptus Road and Orchid Close, Millstream.

By 11.30am the was fire was still moving quickly and firefighters were struggling to get it under control.

"Residents are strongly advised to be prepared to relocate to a safer area if required. Leaving is the safest option for survival in a bushfire," QFES said.

Multiple fire crews have been deployed and the area is being water-bombed.

QFES spokesman Bernie Grech said crews had been doorknocking for the past week to prepare residents, but many weren't prepared.

"No firebreaks around sheds, no breaks around vehicles, no breaks around storage areas, basically there's a lot of stuff sitting in long grass," he told ABC radio.
