A Cairns mother was insane when she killed eight children in 2014 and will not stand trial over the deaths, a court has ruled.

Raina Thaiday, also known as Mersane Warria, was charged with eight counts of murder over the deaths of her seven children and a niece at the family's suburban Manoora home in December 2014.

But she will never face trial after the Mental Health Court last month found she was of unsound mind at the time of the massacre.

Thaiday was smoking up to 20 cones of cannabis a day when she developed a severe form of schizophrenia in late 2014.

The 37-year-old believed she was the "Chosen One" and became obsessed with cleansing to protect herself and her family from demons.

On December 19, about a month after the religious delusions began, Thaiday heard a "dove call" telling her it was time to act.

After the April decision was made public on Thursday, Queensland Law Society president Christine Smyth said Thaiday would serve a "life sentence in her own heart" if she was ever able to fully grasp what she did.

"It is not something that any parent wants to know they've done," Ms Smyth said.
