'Can-Do' Newman portrait to be unveiled

An official portrait of former premier Campbell Newman will be unveiled at Queensland's Parliament House.

Speaker Peter Wellington will officially unveil the portrait at a private ceremony on Thursday evening.

With journalists explicitly not invited to attend, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has poked fun at the secrecy surrounding the event in parliament.

She's asked who on the conservative side of the House is going and joked that she's nominated Ashgrove MP Kate Jones to represent the Labor government.

Ms Jones famously lost her seat to Mr Newman when he was parachuted in for the 2012 state election, only to win it back from him in 2015.

The portrait has been painted by former Brisbane City Councillor David Hinchliffe, who served as Mr Newman's deputy for several years while he was lord mayor of Brisbane.

It reportedly features Mr Newman wearing a high-vis vest and holding a hard-hat with his sleeves rolled up, a reference to his "can-do" persona.
