New sexual consent laws introduced in Queensland

New laws will be introduced this week into Queensland's parliament to standardise the age of consent for all sexual acts.

Currently, the age of consent for anal sex is 18, while other sexual acts can take place legally with consent at 16.

Queensland is the only state in Australia where there is a disparity, which the government says discriminates against gay men.

Legislation addressing how the National Injury Insurance Scheme affects workplace accidents will also be introduced.

MPs will also debate legislation aimed at facilitating the merger of the electricity distributors Energex and Ergon into one parent company - Energy Queensland.

However, the week's main focus will be on Treasurer Curtis Pitt's second budget, which will be handed down on Tuesday.

Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls will give his budget reply speech in parliament two days later.

Parliamentary sittings have been extended until Friday due to the budget being handed down.
