New Qld donation law could be invalid: LNP

Queensland's Liberal National Party insists it isn't opposing new laws that will lower the reporting threshold for political donations because it has something to hide.

The LNP changed the laws in 2013, which now mean political donations under $12,800 don't have to be declared in Queensland.

Labor wants to change the legislation back to the lower threshold of $1000, arguing it is more transparent.

When the LNP changed the laws, then-Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie argued he was only doing so because Crown Law advice indicated the legislation would be invalid if it didn't line up with the Commonwealth's higher thresholds.

He's since written to a parliamentary committee considering the changes to indicate the advice he'd received in 2013 could mean any reversal wouldn't be allowed.

Ms Palaszczuk said there was only one reason the LNP wouldn't want the law, which would be retrospective, changed back.

"The only thing I can possibly think of is that the LNP are hiding something for them not to come onboard and accept our plans to review those electoral donations," Ms Palaszczuk asked.

She said NSW Premier Mike Baird was also introducing a $1000 political donations threshold.

But Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said the only reason the Crown Law advice was offered for consideration was to ensure Labor was enacting legislation that wouldn't be later overruled in the High Court.

"I think it would be grossly irresponsible to have legislation go before the parliament where this is significant legal advice from our best legal experts that indicate there is a legal inconsistency," Mr Springborg said.

"The LNP does not stand opposed to any reasonable disclosure laws."
