Missing person app to assist Qld police

A missing persons app, which allows police to upload data, details and photos at a faster rate, will be trialled in Queensland in late August.

The app also has provisions for police to obtain legal authority from family or next of kin members to release details.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said there are about 6000 missing person reports filed each year and currently there are 350 on the long term missing register.

The data police need to collect includes photos, medical history, bank account and social media information and family contacts.

Currently, anyone making a missing persons report has to visit a police station to fill out the necessary forms.

However, the app allows police to make home visits by using the app to compile a report.

The app will be trialled in the Ipswich and Moreton areas from August 22 and it's envisaged it will eventually be rolled out to all police across the state.

Acting Police Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the app could save hours of paperwork and lead to police searching for a missing person much sooner.

"Time is of the essence in locating a person that has gone missing and the need for police to get on with the job of finding the person is crucial."
