Navy sailor charged over NT death

A Cairns sailor charged over the manslaughter of a man in Darwin has been granted bail.

Jason Kelly, 23, was arrested in Cairns on Tuesday over the death of a 68-year-old man after an alleged assault in central Darwin on August 9.

Northern Territory police say the man had been walking along a street when a fight broke out with the accused, causing him to fall and hit his head. He died in hospital on August 22.

Kelly, who is a member of the Australian Defence Force, faced the Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday where an application for his extradition was approved.

He was granted bail and is due to face the Darwin Magistrates Court on September 23.

He must reapply for bail when he faces court in Darwin.

Police didn't oppose bail.
