Buggy crash victim's condition improves

The condition of a nine-month old baby girl injured in a serious buggy crash on Queensland's Hamilton Island has stabilised.

The girl and her 30-year-old mother were badly injured on Thursday when a golf buggy they were travelling in collided with another parked buggy and flipped on its side.

Eight family members - five adults, one toddler and two infants - were injured in total, and the mother-in-law of one of those hurt described the scene as "horrific".

The nine-month-old suffered a fractured skull.

Her condition had improved from critical to a serious but stable condition, a Townsville Hospital spokeswoman said on Saturday.

A second infant, also aged nine-months, was also in a stable condition.

But the 30-year-old woman was still fighting for life.

A man who suffered leg injuries and a woman who sustained facial injuries were both airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital after the accident.

One man collapsed in shock after witnessing the crash.

The golf-style buggies are the main form of transport on the island and drivers must hold a valid driver's licence.

Hamilton Island Enterprises has said the driver was not an employee.

The Forensic Crash Unit was still investigating the cause of the crash, a police spokeswoman said.
