Qld holiday road toll stands at four

Seven people have died on Queensland roads over the holiday period.

In the latest accident, a 27-year-old female pedestrian was killed after she was struck on the Bruce Highway at Morayfield, north of Brisbane, on Saturday night.

A 25-year-old motorcyclist died in Herberton, in far north Queensland, after losing control of his bike and crashing into a tree also on Saturday evening.

With the holiday road safety campaign ending at midnight on Saturday, Queensland police say 318 people have been injured in serious crashes - around 100 fewer than the same time last year.

The number of motorists recording positive results for drug use was concerning, Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said.

"Of the 768 roadside drug tests we performed on drivers over the last 12 days, just over 100 of them tested positive," he said.

"That is a disturbing figure, particularly considering that it represents a nearly 38 per cent increase on this time last year."

Safety messages about mobile phones appeared to be sinking in, with 86 fewer people being caught using their mobiles behind the wheel.

One motorist clocked 131km/h in a 60km/h zone at Pallara, in Brisbane's outer west and another was caught doing 171km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Gold Coast.

Police impounded 450 vehicles over the holiday period.

Despite the seven holiday fatalities, Queensland police are only counting four as part of the official road toll.

The pedestrian, a death following a medical condition and another believed to be suspicious are not included in the toll.
