Large hailstones forecast for Brisbane

Brisbane has escaped the wrath of a second severe thunderstorm as it tracks north towards Gympie.

Queensland's weather bureau says heavy rain and damaging winds are expected to lash Conondale and the ranges south of Jimna on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, possibly leading to flash floods.

Earlier on Friday, the bureau warned large hailstones would hit Brisbane and other parts of southeast Queensland before cancelling the forecast.

It's a relief for the city which is still mopping up from last week's supercell storm, which damaged thousands of cars and homes.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk believes the damage bill will ultimately be about $1 billion.

The Insurance Council of Australia said on Thursday insurance claims worth $482 million - involving 17,500 homes and 51,470 cars - had already been lodged.

There are also storm warnings for the state's northwest and central west regions, including the channel country and Wide Bay and Burnett districts.
