Emergency zone lifted at Mooloolaba

Parts of Mooloolaba have been reopened to the public, two days after a mini-tornado tore through part of the Sunshine Coast community.

Wild weather on Sunday night left significant damage to a number of buildings, including tearing the roof off some blocks of flats.

Police have now lifted an exclusion zone around Akering Place, Corowa Court and Amarina Avenue, but several buildings remain cordoned off.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Katarina Carroll said about 40 residents had been affected by the storm.

She was shocked by the extent of the destruction.

"I think we're extraordinarily lucky that no one was hurt because there was millimetres and centimetres in it for some people," she said.

Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne, who toured the site with Ms Carroll on Tuesday, said recovery efforts were well underway.
