Mongolian man to stand trial for GC rape

A Mongolian man accused of raping a British tourist at a Gold Coast hotel will stand trial.

Myagmarnyam Altan-Ochir faced Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday for a committal hearing on one count each of rape and supplying dangerous drugs.

It's alleged Altan-Ochir, who was studying in Australia, raped the woman at the Surfers Paradise hotel in January 2016 after the pair had met during a night out.

It's also alleged Altan-Ochir supplied the woman with an MDMA tablet at a park before the alleged rape occurred.

The woman, who has since returned to Britain, gave evidence in Thursday's hearing via video-link.

Senior Constable Angela Mills, who interviewed her at the scene, told the court she had refused to make a formal complaint at that time.

"She just wanted to go home to England," Sen Const Mills said.

Sen Const Mills also denied the suggestion by defence barrister David Funch that she or another police officer had expressed an opinion to the woman that any rape complaint "wouldn't go very far".

Altan-Ochir, who will remain in immigration detention in Western Australia, will stand trial at a date to be determined in the Southport District Court.
